As a high school placement counselor working in a K-12 school, I have read hundreds of applications and worked with a variety of schools. I have a unique understanding of the process – what works and what to avoid.
90% of the students I’ve worked with have been accepted to their first choice schools, including Exeter, Choate, Hotchkiss, University High School, Branson, Marin Academy, Urban, Marin Catholic, Saint Ignatius and many more both locally and nationally.
As we begin the journey together, we would focus on the following:
- Review how admission committees evaluate grades, applications, and test scores
- Determine the best list of schools for your child based on their passions, learning style, and academic profile
- Discuss the benefits of declaring a first choice school
- Write an effective application and avoid mistakes families often make
- Prepare students for their school interviews – a key component of the admissions process
Depending on where you are in the process, we would also cover the following:
- Organize steps to be taken during the spring of 7th grade
- Differentiate the types of testing methods – SSAT, ISEE, HSPT – and develop a strategy to prepare for it
- Address learning differences if needed
- Discuss the benefits of the Character Skills Snapshot
- Advise on extracurricular activities and summer programs
- Create a personalized timeline to avoid missing any important registration dates
- Discuss when to visit high schools and the most important factors to look for
- Discuss how to best position your child on a waitlist if needed
We are currently living in unprecedented times. There are many unknowns for next year’s admissions process and it is critical that families stay informed and up to date with information. Together we can make this a more positive experience for your family.
